Bayport-Blue Point Community assists Hurricane Harvey victims

September 28, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Due to outstanding student efforts, the Bayport-Blue Point High School community recently collected $1,901.78 to be donated to the GlobalGiving Foundation to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey and their recovery efforts.

The effort was spearheaded by 11th-grade student Nikolai Dolan who was reminded of the affects that Superstorm Sandy had on the local community in 2012 after seeing footage of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas. Together, with the help of Bayport-Blue Point High School English teacher Stacie Pintar, the two brainstormed a plan to help those affected by the latest weather phenomenon.

“Each day, after school, Nikolai would meet with me to count the money from the collection envelopes and to write announcements to encourage the community to continue to donate,” said Mrs. Pintar. “Prior to Open School Night, Nikolai recorded a phone message to go out to the parents in the community about our collection jar that evening. After just one week, $1, 901.78 was collected. I am very proud of Nikolai’s determination to make a difference and am grateful to the members of the school community for their generosity.”

According to their website, the GlobalGiving Foundation will provide relief to survivors in the form of emergency supplies like food, water and medicine in addition to long-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild. All donations will exclusively support relief and recovery efforts from this storm.

September 28, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

NEW YORK, NY – This past Sunday, the Iona women’s lacrosse and golf programs had the opportunity to volunteer at the 16th Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run.  The run is held in honor of firefighter Stephen Siller and follows the path he ran from Brooklyn to the World Trade Center where he sacrificed his life to save hundreds of people during the attack.

All of the money raised at the event is donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation that supports first responders and wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The Iona representatives were placed at the finish line where they cheered on over 30,000 participants of the run. Their energy and positive attitudes helped fuel runner for the final leg of the race.  The lacrosse team also had the unique chance to cheer on their coaches and teammates who participated in the 5k run.

Women’s Rugby Cares: Volunteering with We Care Blankets to Help Sick Children

September 27, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2017) – Embodying the Molloy College message of community and service, the women’s rugby team took advantage of an off weekend to spend time helping We Care Blankets, an organization that supplies hand-made blankets to children undergoing chemotherapy.

Earlier this month, the team spent an evening at the Merrick Library during one of the organization’s monthly Blanket Wraps. At this time, hand-made blankets are made and packaged to be set up for delivery to one of 25 hospitals.

“It’s always a beautiful thing to give back to your community, especially to those in need,” said one of the team’s captains, senior Caroline Nickels (Floral Park, N.Y.). “It is heart-warming to know that my team and I contributed to this foundation to help brighten a child’s day.”
The opportunity to come together as a team not only presented an opportunity to help others, but gave the student-athletes the ability to bond together over a common cause off the pitch.

“Not only will we have memories of playing a sport that we love,” explained senior Alissa Guerra (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), but we will have memories of times we spent with one another doing something to make an impact in someone’s life.”

This weekend, the student-athletes took advantage of a bye week to help out and deliver over 400 blankets to six different hospitals in Brooklyn, New York City, and Mount Pleasant. Splitting up into groups allowed women’s rugby to ensure that as many children in different locations were able to receive a visit and gift to lift their spirits.

“We take so much for granted, but the blankets mean so much to these kids,” said sophomore Emma Haedrich(West Islip, N.Y.). “It was a simple act, but it had an enormous impact on us knowing how much they really appreciate the blankets.”

Getting to personally deliver the blankets and brighten a child’s day left a lasting impression on the team.

“It was a great opportunity to bring a little extra joy to kids who need it the most,” recalled sophomore Maddie Howell(Marmora, N.J.). “Those blankets were made, folded, and delivered with so much hope and love.”

Massapequa students support hurricane relief efforts

Several student organizations in the Massapequa School District banded together to help the victims of recent hurricanes.

The Chiefs Challenge clubs at Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses combined to raise more than $700 for the American Red Cross to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Students sold packets of gum during the school day and at back-to-school nights, attached to index cards that read “Thanks for going the EXTRA miles for Hurricane Harvey victims.”

At Berner Middle School, the Chiefs Challenge Club and Builders Club combined to raise more than $600 for hurricane relief efforts. During lunch periods, students in the Builders Club sold small bags of digital supplies to raise money for hurricane relief. The bags included a set of earbuds, a small microfiber screen cloth and a touchscreen stylus pen.

Funds raised by the Berner clubs and Comfy for a Cause, a collection taken by the Massapequa Federation of Teachers, will be donated to Team Rubicon, an organization that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.
